Really I'd advise just to keep things natural and human. You never know, a neutral tone might make the recipient a bit easier to deal with over time.

You can write the sarcastic version too. Good stress relief! Just make sure to send the right version 😂

Happy Earth Day?

@content_for_humans and @tim_the_writer support safety, inclusion and sustainability.

Conflicts, equality policies and climate issues can be complicated, but we're willing the world to make human choices.

That said, this year’s Earth Day theme is ‘planet vs plastics’ – here’s how we do our bit for that:

- Use a reusable water bottle
- Look for plastic-free packaging
- Reduce plastic by using soap
- Recycle everything we can
- Support plastic-free businesses

Also sold Troy (Tim’s not-so-green yet green-painted car), take public transport, work remotely, grow food, and buy second-hand things where possible.

Some of these things can seem futile when leaders and corporations are making inhumane choices.

But let’s keep going anyway 🌍🙂

Are you writing content for humans?

There’s so much formal, complex stuff out there, which doesn’t create human connections.

So to save us all from robots and jarring sentences, here are three writing tips from @tim_the_writer of @content_for_humans 😄

1. Write how you speak

This one gives you quite a few things to think about – phrasing, flow, tone, interaction, quotes, personality.

2. Read your writing out loud

Sure, you sound a bit bonkers if you do this in public, but it helps you pick up any clunky, wonky or overlong sentences.

3. Work with an editor

People often say they’re quick to get the details down in a list or a first draft. But they struggle to turn that into the finished version – something that’s polished, relatable and welcomes people into your world.

Some nice humans from our 50 Worst Words blog explain some of their least favourite words – or good words used badly.

5. Cascading

We often work with Nancy's @aligneddesignco team on branding and tone of voice – we agree that poetic words like 'cascading' should be protected from corporate speak. A lovely word for waterfalls though.

12. Ever-changing

Cara’s right – this one's pointless. Things are always changing. Thanks Cara 😄

29. Natural

We agree with Michelle @zerowastesunflower – 'natural' is often used as greenwashing. Unless it's backed up by relevant sustainability credentials.

35. Policy

A powerful suggestion from LGBTQ+ Youth Worker @charlydork – so many 'policies' are becoming more inhumane, and the word itself feels impersonal and oppressive.

37. Push

As @santographic says, some words aren't as nice to pronounce as others. 'Push' seems to drag on too long when we say it out loud. Say 'push' 10 times 😉
